İzmir’in Bergama İlçesi’nde bulunan Allianoi Antik Kenti'nin Yortanlı Baraj suları altında kalmasının önünde engel kalmadı. İzmir 2 No’lu Kültür ve Tabiat Varlıklarını Koruma Kurulu, antik kentin ‘kumla’ doldurulduktan sonra baraj sularının altında kalmasına izin verdi.

İŞTE SULAR ALTINDA KALACAK ANTİK KENT
Yortanlı Barajı gölü içerisinde kalan ve çevrecilerin uzun yıllardır baraj sularının altında kalmasını önlemek için mücadele ettikleri evrensel kültür mirası niteliğindeki Allianoi Antik Kenti’nin baraj gölüne katılmasının önünde engel kalmadı. Çeşitli üniversitelerdeki öğretim üyeleri tarafından oluşturulan yeni bilim heyetinin 4 Ağustos 2010 tarihinde verdiği rapora uyan İzmir 2 No’lu Kültür ve Tabiat Varlıklarını Koruma Kurulu, antik kentin DSİ’nin önerisi doğrultusunda kumla kaplanarak korunmasına karar verdi. İzmir 2 No’lu Kültür ve Tabiat Varlıklarını Koruma Kurulu’nun kararı üzerine Bergama Müzesi kontrolörlüğünde antik kentte ot temizliği çalışmaları başladı.
ÇEVRECİLER AYAKLANDI
Gelişmeler üzerine Allianoi’nin Yortanlı Barajı’nın suları altında kalmasını önlemek için mücadele eden Alliaoni Girişim Grubu üyeleri antik kente giderek inceleme yaptı. Antik kentteki gelişmelerin kaygı verici olduğunu söyleyen Allianoi Girişim Grubu Dönem Sözcüsü İffet Diler, “Kalabalık bir işçi grubu temizlik çalışmaları yapıyordu. Büyük hamamda bulunan suların tahliyesine başlamışlardı. Bu çalışmanın ardından restorasyon öğrencilerinin gelip duvarlarda güçlendirme çalışması yapacağını öğrendik” diye konuştu.
RAPORDA “KÜÇÜK” DEĞİŞİKLİK
Gelişmeler hakkında sağlıklı bilgi edinemediklerini ifade eden Diler, “Bize bilgi vermekten kaçınıyorlar. Ancak öğrendiğimiz kadarıyla yeni bir bilim heyeti oluşturulmuş ve Kurul bu heyetin raporu ışığında bir karar vermiş. Bilim heyeti de daha önce Danıştay tarafından iptal edilen ve kalıntıların mille kaplanmasını öngören raporda ‘küçük’ bir değişiklik yapmış, daha önce kalıntıların siltli kille kaplanması öngörülüyordu bu sefer kilin yerini kum almış. Bu gelişmeler karşısında şaşkına döndük. İşlemin durdurulması için en kısa zamanda mahkemeye başvuracağız” dedi.
Allianoi Girişim Grubu üyelerinden Jeofizik Mühendisi Erhan İçöz, kil yerine kum kullanmanın antik kente daha büyük zarar vereceğini ileri sürdü. İçöz, “Daha önce mahkemenin iptal ettiği tavsiye kararında ‘siltli kil’ ile kaplanması öngörülüyordu. Bu sefer karara kum yazmışlar. Siltli kil, kilin biraz daha büyük tanecikli olanıdır. Kum ise en iri taneli olan malzemedir. Kil suyu geçirmez, kendi bünyesine alır ve şişer kum ise suyu geçirir. Bu durumda antik kalıntıların suyla teması kesilmeyecek ve üzerlerindeki kum nedeniyle de sürekli tahribata maruz kalacak” diye konuştu.
GÖREVİ KÖTÜYE KULLANMAKTAN SUÇ DUYURUSU
Allianoi’nin kille kaplanarak sular altında bırakılmasına karşı 4 iptal, 2 yütürmeyi durdurma kararı aldıklarını söyleyen Avukat Hilal Küey ise, “Açılan bütün davalar Allianoi lehine sonuçlandı. Sadece 2009 yılında alınan karara karşı açtığımız dava sürüyor. Bütün bunlara karşın yine hukukun arkasına dolanarak yeni bir karar çıkartmışlar. Kille kaplanmasına karşı ortada bir yürütmeyi durdurma kararı varken ‘kil yerine kum’ diye yeni karar almak artık aynı konuda ‘bezdirici’ karar almak sınıfına giriyor, Türk Ceza Yasası’na göre bunun karşılığı görevi kötüye kullanmak oluyor. Bunlar biraz dalga geçer gibi kil yerine kum yazıp aynı kararı alarak mahkeme kararın ihlal ediyorlar. Anayasa’ya göre mahkeme kararının bütün kurumlar tarafından uygulanması gerekiyor. Bunun sorumluları hakkında Cumhuriyet Savcılığı’na görevi kötüye kullanmak suçundan suç duyurusunda bulunacağız” dedi.
DSİ’NİN KONTROLÜNDE ÇALIŞILACAK
Öte yandan İzmir İl Kültür ve Turizm Müdürü Abdülaziz Ediz, İzmir 2 No’lu Kültür ve Tabiat Varlıklarını Koruma Kurulu’nun, oluşturulan bilim heyetinin 4 Ağustos 2010 tarihli raporuna dayaranak 17 Ağustos 2010 tarihinde kumla gömme kararı verdiğini dile getirdi. Ediz, “Geçen hafta Kültür ve Tabiat Varlıklarını Koruma Genel Müdürlüğü’nden yazı geldi. Allianoi ile ilgili mahkeme süreçleri de bitmiş durumda. Kurul’un verdiği kararı DSİ uygulamaya başlıyor. Bundan sonra çalışmalar DSİ’nin yapacağı iş programı çerçevesinde sürecek ve bir engel kalmadığı için de su tutulacak” diye konuştu.

DurDe’nin her ay düzenlediği “Ayın Irkçısı” seçimi bu kez DurDe! katılımcıları ve destekçilerinin doğrudan oylarıyla gerçekleşti. Bu ay ilk kez başlattığımız oylamaya web sitesi üzerinden toplam 1.672 kişi katıldı. Altı aday isim üzerinden yapılan oylamada “Temmuz Ayı Irkçısı” ödülüne, oyların yüzde 34’ünü (583 oy) alan Devlet Bakanı ve Başbakan Yardımcısı Cemil Çiçek layık görüldü.

Devlet Bakanı ve Başbakan Yardımcısı Cemil Çiçek, Yozgat’ta bir yüksek okulun temel atma töreninde konuşma yaparak “Nijerya’daki Nijeryalılara Türkçe’yi öğrettik, Hakkâri’dekine, Diyarbakır’dakine hâlâ Türkçe’yi öğretemedik” dedi. Çiçek, bu sözleriyle Hem Nijeryalıları hem de Kürtleri aşağılıyor. Kürtlerin hepsine Türkçe öğreterek Kürt sorununun ortadan kalkacağını düşünüyor. Çiçek bu sözleriyle Temmuz ayı ırkçısı adayları arasına girerek, birinciliği aldı.

Üç Ekoloji Doğa Düşünce Siyaset 8

Dosya: Yeşiller ve Sosyalizm

Yeşil hareketin kırk yıllık tarihinde bundan daha çok tartışılmış, hareket içinde bundan daha çok çatışma nedeni olmuş, üzerinde daha çok yazı yazılmış konu azdır...

Üç Ekoloji'nin 8. sayısında ilk kez 'neredeyse' bir özel sayı yapıyoruz. Bu özel sayının konusunun “Yeşiller ve Sosyalizm” olması şaşırtıcı değil elbette. Yeşil hareketin kırk yıllık tarihinde bundan daha çok tartışılmış, hareket içinde bundan daha çok çatışma nedeni olmuş, üzerinde daha çok yazı yazılmış konu azdır. Üç Ekoloji'de bu konuya ilk kez derli toplu eğilmeye karar verdiğimiz zaman ortaya kapsamlı bir dosya çıkacağını biliyorduk. Ama böyle olunca başka pek bir yazıya yer kalmadı.

Dosya yazılarımız dışında sadece olmazsa olmaz iki köşemize yer ayırabildik: Yeşil düşünce klasiklerinde Almanya'nın öncü sanatçılarından Joseph Beuys'un Alman Yeşilleri'nin kuruluş sürecinde önemli yeri olan 1978 tarihli bir manifestosuna yer verdik. Bu sayının büyük “politikadan düşünceye” röportajında ise Türkiye'de çevre hareketinin en eski ve saygın isimlerinden Oktay Demirkan'ı ağırladık. Bu yazılar dışında 8. sayımız tamamen Yeşiller ve Sosyalizm dosyasından oluşuyor.

Dosyanın içeriğine gelince... Öncelikle üç orijinal söyleşiden söz etmemiz gerekiyor. Bu özel söyleşilerin ilkini Türkiye'de “Yeşiller ve Sosyalizm” konusunu ilk kez gündeme getiren ve bu konuda bir de kitap yazan Tanıl Bora ile yaptık. Tanıl Bora 20 yıl önceki durumla bugünün karşılaştırması ve solun yeşil politikayla ilişkisi hakkında zihin açıcı yorumlarda bulundu. İngiltere ve Galler Yeşil Partisi'nin eski eş sözcülerinden Derek Wall kendisiyle yaptığımız söyleşide yeşil bir ekososyalist olarak güncel politikada solla yeşillerin ilişkisi açısından ilginç değerlendirmeler yaptı. Alman Yeşilleri'nin sol kanadından Albert Statz'la yaptığımız söyleşi ise dünyada bu konudaki parti içi ayrışmaların en iyi bilinen örneği olan Alman Yeşilleri'nde yeşillerle sosyalistlerin ilişkisine dair içeriden gözlemlerle dolu: Hem tarihsel, hem de güncel bir bakışla...

Alman Yeşilleri'nin “realo” kanadından Helmuth Lippelt'in yazısını da Albert Statz söyleşisiyle birlikte okumak gerekli. Aynı partinin iki rakip kanadından aynı dönemin değerlendirmesini ardarda okumak dönemi ve yeşil hareket içindeki sosyalizm tartışmasının kökenlerini anlamak için iyi bir şans.

Dosya yazılarımız içinde Robyn Eckersley'in temel öneme sahip “Sosyalizm ve Eko-merkezcilik” yazısını da Ayşem Mert'in, Dilaver Demirağ'ın ve Şadi İdem'in yazılarıyla birlikte değerlendirmek gerek. Yeşil taraftan yapılmış bu kadar detaylı Marksizm (ve ekososyalizm) eleştirileri Türkiye’de bir ilk çünkü. Ümit Şahin'in yeşillerle sosyalizmin tarihsel kesişme noktasının anti-Marksist ve anarşist olduğu iddiasında bulunduğu yazısı da dosyaya yapılan özgün katkılardan bir diğeri.

Üç Ekoloji'nin sosyalizm dosyası her ne kadar ağırlıklı olarak yeşil (ve yeşil ekososyalist) taraftan gelen katkılardan oluşuyorsa da, soruşturma bölümünün de Türkiye'nin bazı önde gelen sosyalist yazar ve aktivistlerinin konu hakkındaki görüşlerini yansıtması açısından son derece ilgi çekici olduğunu düşünüyoruz. Soruşturma bölümü dosyamızı bir tür diyaloğa dönüştürüyor.

Türkiye'de yeşil politika ilk kez daha çok sosyalistler tarafından savunuldu, yeşil düşünce de sosyalistlerin başlattığı bir tartışma olarak gündeme geldi. Üç Ekoloji'nin ilk sayısında Melih Ergen Türkiye'de yeşillerin en önemli eksiğinin Marksizmle hesaplaşmasını tamamlamaması olduğunu söylemişti. Bu görüşün bir dönem için belirleyici olduğu aşikar. Ama biz bugün yeşil düşüncenin sosyalizm karşısında savunmada olduğu fikrine katılmıyoruz. Tam tersine bugün zeminini kaybetmeye başlayan sosyalist ve Marksist akımların yeşil düşünceyle ve yeşillerin ortaya koyduğu politik gündemle hesaplaşması gerekiyor.

Dünya ve insanlık nihai bir yol ayrımında. Ekolojik yıkım artık bir öngörü değil. Yeşiller son kırk yıldır sömürü, mülkiyet ve paylaşım sorunlarının ötesine geçip bu yıkımdan kurtulmak için yeni düşünceler ve politik araçlar geliştiriyorlar. Geçen yüzyılı belirleyen sosyalist fikriyatın yeşil düşünce karşısında kendini yenilemesi bile yeterli olmayabilir artık.

Üç Ekoloji'nin bu özel sayısı böyle bir iddianın dışa vurumudur.

That is to say, divest from companies that profit from Israel's occupation of the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.

Some of these companies provide weapons and covert surveillance supplies that maintain the occupation by force. Others take or exploit Palestinian resources, including scarce water and even the land itself. All are profiting from Israel's violations of international law and international human rights standards.

Some examples:

• CATERPILLAR profits from the destruction of Palestinian homes and the uprooting of Palestinian orchards by supplying the armor-plated and weaponized bulldozers that are used for such demolition work.
• VEOLIA profits from the construction and expansion of illegal Jewish-only settlements by operating a landfill in the West Bank, exploiting Palestinian natural resources to serve the settlements, and by contracting for the future operation of an illegal light rail system connecting these settlements with Jerusalem.
• NORTHROP GRUMMAN profits from the production of parts for the Apache helicopters and F-16 aircrafts used by Israel against civilians in Gaza during Israel's 2008-09 assault.
• ELBIT profits from the confiscation of Palestinian land by providing surveillance equipment that is mounted on the Separation Wall, which was declared unlawful by the International Court of Justice.
• MOTOROLA profits from Israel's control of the Palestinian population by providing surveillance systems around Israeli settlements, checkpoints, and military camps in the West Bank, as well as communication systems to the Israeli army and West Bank settlers.

Nasıl ki, ilk köprü trafiği rahatlatmışsa, ikinci köprü trafiği rahatlatmışsa bu yapılması planlanan köprü de trafiği rahatlatır. Trafik için en güzeli herhalde boğazın asfaltlanması olur ki o zaman gerçekten trafik çok rahat olur. Siz trafiği, arabaların bir yerden bir yere gitmesini “en kutsal” olarak görürseniz, ekonomik kriz ile ilgili önlemlerde aklınıza ilk otomobil satışında vergileri düşürmek gelirse daha çok kemerinizi açarsınız. Kilo vermeniz gerektiğini bazen hissedersiniz ama, yeni köprülerin getireceği rant hoşunuza gider. Bu yolların asla bir sonunun olmadığını, bir tanesi yaptığınızda ikincisini de yapmaya mecbur kalacağınızı bilirsiniz ama kemeri gevşetmek ve o anlık rahatlama sizi içine çeker.

Amacınız nedir? İnsanları bir yerden bir yere taşımak mı? Otomobilleri, kamyonları bir yerden bir yere taşımak mı? Buna açık yüreklilikle, otomobilleri taşımak tabii ki, diyebilecek herhalde kimse yoktur. Tek tek sorulursa ve yanıt alınabilirse herkes ilkini söyleyecektir. Peki neden uygulamada bunun tam tersi oluyor? Tam tersi gerçekleşiyor? Fikir ile eylem arasındaki bağlar bu kadar mı kopuk olabilir mi? Madem, iki yaka arasında köprüleri gerektirecek kadar büyük bir insan akımı var, bunu toplu taşımaya yönlendirerek, toplu taşımayı bir eziyet haline getirmekten çıkartıp gerçek bir seçenek haline getirerek çözmeye çalışmak hiç düşünülmüyorsa bu iyi niyet midir? İyi niyetli bir politika mıdır? Böyle bir şehirde, çok gelişmiş bir deniz ulaşımının olması beklenmez mi? Her noktaya ulaşacak bir vapur sisteminin olması beklenmez mi? Var mı? Yok.

Açıkça söylenmelidir artık. Şu anda karar alan mevkilerde oturanlar, kara yolu ulaşımına göbekten bağlıdırlar. Gerekirse on yıl sonra bir köprü daha yapmak da isteyebilirler ki gerekecektir bu politikaları devam ettiği sürece. Önünü alamazlar, almak için bir politikaları yok çünkü. Bir ulaşım politikaları da yok. Üçüncü köprü yapılırken, yapılmasının planı açıklanırken, bir tane öneri duydunuz mu, dördüncü köprünün olmasını, gerekmesini engelleyecek? Engellenmelidir çünkü! Belediyeler, hükümetler sadece kentleşme politikası için değil, yaşam için artık otomobil ile seyehati en az düzeye indirmeye, insanları otomobilden soğutmaya mecburlar. En büyük görevlerinden bir tanesi bu olmalı. Türkiye’de ise tam tersi. Daha çok otomobil alın, elinizdekini değiştirin, toplu taşıma, raylı sistem, deniz ulaşımı değil, karayolunu tercih edin diye çırpınıyor herkes. İzmir’de de bu şekilde, Ankara’da da bu şekilde. Daha dün, İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi metro ve hafif raylı sistemin bazı güzergahlarının çalışma sürelerini verimlilik nedeniyle kısalttı. Böyle yönetiliyor şehirler ve ülke.

İşte bu yüzden trafik rahatlatılmaya muhtaç bir obez canavar olarak büyüyor karar alan insanların kucağında. Karadeniz’i otoyola çevirdiler rahatladı; İstanbul’u köprülerle donattılar rahatladı; İzmir’e köprü yapmak istiyorlar, yaptıklarında rahatlar. Bir trafiği mücadele edilecek değil, rahatlatacak bir olgu olarak gördükten sonra, doğayı yok edip, asfalt dökecek yer mi yok ülkede?

When I got the news about Israel's armed attack on the Gaza Flotilla at 2:30 am on the morning of May 31, I felt sick. I immediately called a dear friend in Jerusalem, one of the most committed activists I know. Across the ocean, I could hear in her voice that she was in tears. "The worst part about it, " she said, "is that nothing will change."

"No," I replied. "I can't believe that can be true. Things have to change."
"Well," she said, "then it is up to you, the internationals."

She's right. It is up to us, the internationals both here in the United States and abroad. That is why I want you to send a message to US President Obama if you live outside of the United States, and to Obama and the US Congress if you are a U.S. resident, demanding the immediate release of the detained human rights activists, an end to the siege on Gaza, an impartial investigation of the attack on the flotilla, and a suspension of US aid until Israel abides by international law.

We still don't know a lot about what happened to the flotilla of boats carrying some 700 human rights activists from around the world and over 10 tons of humanitarian aid to Gaza-- Israel has kept the activists under a near total media blackout while sharing only its implausible narrative of events. What we do know is that Israeli commandos boarded a ship in international waters and killed at least ten activists, injuring dozens of others.

Israel insists that highly trained commandos were forced to lethally fire on activists, creating a new definition of self-defense. In the first alternative accounts to appear, an Israeli Knesset member and an Al Jazeera cameraman who were on board the ship at the time each described something different, a scene of chaos with civilians waving white flags and commandos using stun guns, rubber bullets and tear gas. Regardless of what actually happened when armed soldiers landed, Israel's wanton killing of civilians is unacceptable.

We still don't know the names of those who were killed or injured, or where they are from. And we don't know the whereabouts or well-being of more than 400 activists still being held by Israel.

These deaths, and the attacks on the boats, have hit all of us around the world particularly hard. There were people from 40 different countries on board the ships, including Israelis and Palestinians. Israel sent armed commandos onto a civilian ship in international waters, a brazenly illegal act to enforce Israel's nearly 3-year illegal siege of Gaza - a siege that has left 1.5 million men, women and children living like prisoners on substandard diets, deprived of the simplest things like potato chips, musical instruments, and toys. The flotilla wasn't just about this one delivery of aid. It was about the right of Palestinians to have sea, land and air routes to the rest of the world and for the need to end the blockade.

I know that there comes a point in one's life when you simply have to take a stand. You cannot sit by silently and watch ongoing and wholly unjustified destruction of life, tacitly supported by governments around the world, and simply do nothing.

The flotilla was filled with people just like you and me who finally decided it was time to risk life and limb to take a stand, to break through those prison walls, and we thank them for it.

Now, as citizens of the world, we owe it to the people of Palestine, and the people of Israel who want to live in peace, and the brave people on that flotilla, to build the movement to make Israel accountable to international law and standards of simple human decency - especially because our governments have failed us.

The response of the U.S. government thus far has been wholly inadequate, with a mild statement "regretting the loss of life," without assigning any blame for the fiasco, let alone applying any sanctions for Israel's acts. Please, join me in telling President Obama and Congress enough is enough

. US taxpayer dollars fund Israel's occupation, and together with wall to wall uncritical diplomatic support have sent the message that any Israeli action, no matter how foolhardy, will be backed by the full might of the United States.

It's time for that to stop.

We must also continue to build the already massive global people's movement for justice, which has undeniably found its greatest impact in the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. This is about all of the ways, big and small, people can bypass their often ineffective governments to use economic pressure to make the Israeli government accountable to international law. After launching our energetic support for campus efforts to divest from the occupation, Jewish Voice for Peace will let you know soon about our own divestment campaign to help bring pressure on Israel to reach a just solution.

It is time for the United States, as Israel's closest ally and most powerful nation in the world, to stop unconditional support for the Israeli government.Doing so will protect Israelis and Palestinians, American citizens, and internationals alike.

German President Kohler Resigns

over his comments (below) on the military involvement of Germany in Afghanistan:

Yeşiller Partisi Eşsözcüleri Bilge Contepe ve Hüseeyin Güngör İsrail'in sabah saatlerinde insani yardım gemilerine saldırısıyla ilgili bir açıklama yaptılar. Açıklama şöyle:

“Bu sabaha karşı 04:00’da İsrail Deniz Kuvvetleri’ne bağlı askerler Gazze açıklarındaki uluslararası sularda Gazze'ye insani yardım malzemesi taşıyan silahsız bir sivil gemi filosuna saldırdı. Son rakamlara göre ondan fazla aktivist hayatlarını kaybetmiş, altmışa yakın kişi yaralanmıştır. Bu ölümlerin sorumluları güç kullanan askerlerden ziyade onlara bu yetkiyi veren İsrail devletidir. İsrail bölgeyi ve Türkiye’yi sonu belirsiz bir şiddet sarmalına çekme politikası gütmektedir.

İsrail'in geçmişteki hukuk dışı operasyonları da göz önünde bulundurulduğunda, bunun kontrolden çıkmış bir operasyon olmadığı, İsrail'in “çizdiğim çerçeveyi aşmayın” mesajını vermek amacıyla insani yardım aktivistlerinin hayatlarına soğukkanlı bir şekilde kıyması olduğu aşikardır. Akademide Sendika Kurduk Şimdi de Sendikada Akademi Kuruyoruz

"Okul İçin Değil Yaşam İçin Öğrenin." Bu sloganla yola çıkmıştı Bilgi Üniversitesi. Yıllarca da bilgiyi üniversitenin dar koridorlarından çıkarıp hayatla buluşturmak için çabalayan çalışanlarıyla bir üniversiteden daha ötesi olmayı başarmıştı. Şimdi ise öğrendiklerimizin ve öğrettiklerimizin pratikle sınandığı bir süreçteyiz. Bilginin özgürlük, özgürlüğün örgütlenme olduğunu hep beraber öğreneceğimiz ve öğreteceğimiz bir süreçte.

Bilgi'nin kendisine şiar edindiği slogan belki de asıl şimdi anlam kazanacak: Hocası, asistanı, temizlikçisi... Bir üniversiteyi yaratanlar kim ise, onlar üretecek bilgiyi de. Sendikanın akademisi bilginin değerinin kâr hesaplarıyla ölçülmediği, herkesin düşündüğü, tartıştığı, ifade ettiği, yarattığı bir akademi olacak.

Democratise, democratise...

After the UK elections I renewed my interest in establishing an NGO dedicated to democratise these poor anti-democratic countries that are so deeply undemocratic that they even have the illusion of democracy. Think of the fraudulent US elections as a result of which George W. Bush was elected by Fox News Channel and some republicans from Florida. Think of the Great Australian Firewall, protested by most Australians themselves (even Australians over 15 are now unable to access websites that sell downloadable or physical copies of video games as well as those that host web-based games).

Emancipate, emancipate...

A sister NGO could be one to emancipate women in most modern/ised societies (particularly but not restricted to the 'West'), working on projects such as emancipating women from their physical-image-obsessed way of life (opposing "practices against nature" such as the use of surgery, chemicals, laser technology or extreme levels of make up usage on the body and the face in order to feel acceptable to or confident among others). For starters, the image itself can be ridiculed, the zero-size teenage image in the US, as well as the Japanese manga characters with huge eyes and breasts (which is a racial impossibility for Japanese girls). A possible side project could be: emancipating the American blond from the constant trashing and bashing of the 'culture industry.'
In the Netherlands we even have emancipatory political parties for farm animals, but emancipation of women from painful technologies of epilation and plastic surgery is somehow forgotten... I was simply happy to see a woman with a head-scarf that didn't mind her facial hair: She was with her kids and friends, looked absolutely ok with her appearance, and I don't know how you define emancipation, but mine certainly includes feeling fine with your looks! (although I must admit that it is a much less image obsessed society than many others... the first two days I was visiting New York, I thought I spilt coffee on myself, every one was soooo constantly checking everyone out. Worse still, in Turkey, the upper middle class obsession with looks does not allow women to have a single white hair -no wonder many prefer to wear headscarves! And you know who judge most, on these matters? Women judge one another!)

Elton John's letter to Ryan White, 20 years after his death from AIDS

Dear Ryan,

Twenty years ago this month, you died of AIDS. I would gladly give my fame and fortune if only I could have one more conversation with you, the friend who changed my life as well as the lives of millions living with HIV. Instead, I have written you this letter.

I remember so well when we first met. A young boy with a terrible disease, you were the epitome of grace. You never blamed anyone for the illness that ravaged your body or the torment and stigma you endured.

When students, parents and teachers in your community shunned you, threatened you and expelled you from school, you responded not with words of hate but with understanding beyond your years. You said they were simply afraid of what they did not know.

When the media heralded you as an "innocent victim" because you had contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion, you rejected that label and stood in solidarity with thousands of HIV-positive women and men. You reminded America that all victims of AIDS are innocent.

When you became a celebrity, you embraced the opportunity to educate the nation about the AIDS epidemic, even though your only wish was to live an ordinary life.

Ryan, I wish you could know how much the world has changed since 1990, and how much you changed it.

Young boys and girls with HIV attend school and take medicine that allows them to lead normal lives. Children in America are seldom born with the virus, and they no longer contract it through transfusions. The insults and injustices you suffered are not tolerated by society.

Most important, Ryan, you inspired awareness, which helped lead to lifesaving treatments. In 1990, four months after you died, Congress passed the Ryan White Care Act, which now provides more than $2 billion each year for AIDS medicine and treatment for half a million Americans. Today, countless people with HIV live long, productive lives.

It breaks my heart that you are not one of them. You were 18 when you died, and you would be 38 this year, if only the current treatments existed when you were sick. I think about this every day, because America needs your message of compassion as never before.

Ryan, when you were alive, your story sparked a national conversation about AIDS. But despite all the progress in the past 20 years, the dialogue has waned. I know you would be trying to revive it if you were here today, when the epidemic continues to strike nearly every demographic group, with more than 50,000 new infections in the United States each year. I know you would be loudly calling for the National HIV/AIDS Strategy that was promised by President Obama but has not yet been delivered. I know you would reach out to young people. I know you would work tirelessly to help everyone suffering from HIV, including those who live on the margins of society.

It would sadden you that today, in certain parts of the United States, some poor people with AIDS are still placed on waiting lists to receive treatment. It would anger you that your government is still not doing enough to help vulnerable people with HIV and populations that are at high risk of contracting the virus, including sexually active teenagers. It would upset you that AIDS is a leading cause of death among African Americans.

It would frustrate you that even though hundreds of thousands of HIV-positive Americans are receiving treatment in your name, more than 200,000 don't know their HIV-positive status, largely because of a lingering stigma surrounding the disease that prevents them from being tested. It would disappoint you that many teenagers do not have access to science-based HIV-prevention programs in school, at a time when half of new infections are believed to be among people under 25.

I miss you so very much, Ryan. I was by your side when you died at Riley Hospital. You've been with me every day since. You inspired me to change my life and carry on your work. Because of you, I'm still in the struggle against AIDS, 20 years later. I pledge to not rest until we achieve the compassion for which you so bravely and beautifully fought.

list of cultural events I participated recently...

It's been a while since I reported on what fills my life (except for "The Book")... In the last few weeks, I made some discoveries... Let me start with the movies first...

1) I watched Pandora’s Box (Pandora'nin Kutusu), by Yeşim Ustaoğlu (right).
Awards:

She describes her film as “a story of alienation and isolation. It is a story of individuals whose lives have been shaped by a sterile, middle-class morality, a story that many people touched by the inevitable combination of capitalism and modernity can identify with. It is a kind of human landscape, both universal and singular at the same time…”

Plot Summary:

Three siblings living their different metropolitan lives have to go and find their mother who got lost in a Black Sea village. They bring her back, with her Alzheimer's disease, and find it difficult to adapt to her difficulties in an urban landscape. Only her grandson, who shares the difficulties find an intimacy with her; the rest start realizing that there have been problems in their lives that they've been postponing to solve.

I liked it a lot: as it has been told to me, it was simple, straightforward, well-done. Although I disagree with Ustaoglu's depiction of Istanbul as hell on earth, I understand the necessity of such a depiction for the plot. It's not far from truth either, only, lacking in basics. Also, the ending is a little too stereotypical (nativity symbolism with the old woman vanishing to her mountain) -but in Turkish cinema this is not such a used and abused theme as elsewhere, so it didn't disappoint me too much. At any rate I admire her dramaturgy and symbolism immensely.
Absolutely recommended for Turkish and non-Turkish audiences.

2) I watched Pains of Autumn (Guz Sancisi) by Tomris Giritlioğlu (right).

Plot Summary:

The promising student Behcet finds himself involved in a nationalistic movement while falling madly in love with a Greek prostitute.
In the midst of a “Deep State” operation, singling out non-Muslims as the enemy, the uncontainable love between Elena and Behçet is struggling to defend itself. As Behçet walks the political line drawn by the pen of a militant columnist, every step he takes towards the morning of the 6th of September takes him farther away from his love. Elena, on the other hand, tries to break through the walls of a dead-end destiny drawn up by her grandmother.

Historic backdrop: Istanbul, September 6, 1955

The Istanbul Pogrom (a form of riot directed against a particular group), also known as Istanbul Riots or Constantinople Pogrom; was a pogrom directed primarily at Istanbul's Greek minority on 6–7 September 1955. A Turkish mob, most of which was trucked into the city in advance, assaulted Istanbul’s Greek community for nine hours. Although the mob did not explicitly call for Greeks to be killed, over a dozen people died during or after the pogrom as a result of beatings and arson. Jews and Armenians were also targeted. The pogrom was triggered by Greece's appeal in 1954 to the United Nations to demand self-determination for Cyprus.

Although I did not find the plot or the acting impressive, I felt that all in all it is a good thing that a Turkish director made a movie on the pogrom. Finally... The love and drama-drenched story-line was an absolute turn off. The politics and even the economics of the situation was totally dismissed. Most importantly, what this meant for either of the communities was not included in the movie. Some historical details (such as the media hype about the bombing of Atatürk's house in Thessaloníki) were left unexplained for the international audience.

Recommended only for Turkish and Greek audiences interested in the pogrom.

3) I watched Soul Kitchen by Fatih Akin (right).

Plot Summary:

Zinos, a young restaurant-owner, is left by his long-term girlfriend Nadine. Zinos spends more time in the restaurant than with her, and she has just been offered a job in Shanghai.
Zinos, a young restaurant-owner, is facing the closure of his restaurant Soul Kitchen because of tax debts. On top of that his long-term girlfriend Nadine is leaving him for a job in Shanghai. In a desperate attempt to save his restaurant and make money to follow Nadine, he hires a new chef, the chef however refuses to serve the usual bratwurst and fish fingers for the his lower class costumers and devises his own menu.
In the three weeks before the closure of the Soul Kitchen pure anarchy breaks out: the chef cooks haute cuisine dishes, a new DJ gets the guests dancing after their meals, artists exhibit their work - and the guests like it. Rumours of the new cult hit Soul Kitchen spread fast around Hamburg. Still the closure hangs above his head and when he finds out the building is going to be torn down to make way for a shopping mall, he moves heaven and earth to get his Soul Kitchen back.
Soul Kitchen is about family and friends, about love, trust and loyalty and about the struggle to protect a place called home in an increasingly unpredictable world.

It's fun, it is well-done, and it is not an ambitious movie.
I enjoyed the funky mix of old Turkish comedies and the very German setting. I loved it that the Greek-German protagonist suffers throughout the movie from the most immediate problems of modernity: 1) not being able to get by simply by being creative and hard-working 2) back-aches. I liked the jokes and all in all, I enjoyed myself. Was it a "good" movie? It certainly did not aim at greatness, but I had fun. that should count! Especially in the midst of a terrible back-ache and a writer's block...

Recommended as a feel-good movie.
