With the death of former Indonesian president Suharto, the life of a remarkable man comes to an end. Suharto's autocratic rule of Indonesia lasted 32 years. In May 1998 he was forced to step down amid a huge economic crisis and mass anti-government demonstrations. A year after Suharto resigned Indonesia had its first democratic elections in almost 45 years.
